Children tend to find it really difficult to concentrate on one activity for long periods of time. Finding something that they really enjoy and won’t get bored can be difficult. Not to worry. We’re here to help so we’ve chosen 4 of our favourite craft ideas that will have your children well on their way to becoming the next Picasso.
Bird Seed Ornaments
Summer is blooming and the birds are chirping. Why not create a little snack ornament to hang outside and attract birds. Double up on this craft and try see how many different types of birds you can spot visiting your ornament bird feeder.
For this craft, you will need:
- nuts and seed mix
- coconut oil
- In a small mixing bowl, add 1/4 cup of coconut oil and melt in the microwave for 30 seconds until completely liquid.
- Add 1/2 cup of seed and nut mix to melted coconut oil and stir until fully combined.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Take a tablespoon of the mixture and shape into a small ring on the tray.
- Continue step 5 until all the mixture is gone.
- Cover with cling film and allow to cool and set in the fridge.
- Once cooled, tie a piece of ribbon or string around the bird food ring. these are now ready to hang up outside to feed the birds.
Paper Bag Monster Puppets
Who knew something as simple as a paper bag could be so fun? Well we didn’t until now. These paper bag puppets will have your children bursting with imagination as they can make their puppets look however they want. The weirder the better.
For this craft you will need:
- Brown paper bags
- Paint
- Glue
- pom poms
- Googly eyes
- Use your choice of paint colours to paint the paper bag with any pattern you want.
- Stick on the googly eyes.
- Use the pom poms to create the hair and ears.
- Allow to dry. Your puppets are now ready. Put on a play and show off your creations.
Paper Plate Fans
Create your own little summer essential. A fan is a staple during the summer. Too hot in the heat? Grab your fabulously, glittery fan and cool yourself down in no time.
For this craft you will need:
- Paper plates
- Glue
- Lollipop sticks
- Paint
- First, cut your paper plate in half and lay both halves out on a flat surface.
- Use the glue to stick two lollipop sticks together at one end to make a “V” shape.
- Stick one half of the paper plate the the top of the “V” along the flat edge.
- Paint any pattern you want on both halves of the paper plate and then set aside to dry.
- once dry, stick the other half of the paper plate to the other side of the top of the “V” to create a fan with patterns on both sides.
- Make sure to glue all along the edge of the fan to seal the two halves together.
Air plane Clothespins
This craft turns something as simple a clothes pegs in to a fun toy. the pegs can also be attached to string or ribbon for a fun D.I.Y hanging decoration for a children’s bedroom.
For this craft you will need:
- A pack of clothes pegs
- Glue
- Coloured felt
- Cut the coloured felt into one 1 inch strips with curved edges and two 2 inch strips.
- Stick the two 2 inch strips at the front of the clothes peg. One on top and one on the bottom.
- Stick the 1 inch strip on the back of the clothes peg on top.
- You can also cut out a small triangle piece to create the tail of the plane.
- Allow to dry and then enjoy playing fun little games with your new D.I.Y planes.
Crafts that can be used as toys after you have made them, are a good way to keep children interested in an activity for longer.
