Early Years Foundation Stage – Nursery Curriculum

At St. George’s Nursery, we understand that each child is unique and we identify each child’s individual needs. In turn, our team plan an appropriate range of varied activities to grow and develop their interests and understanding and deepen all areas of learning. This ensures that each child goes on a personalised learning journey.

We follow the Early Years Foundations Stage (EYFS), a government framework for learning, development and care of children from birth to five. Its purpose is to provide all children with the best possible learning opportunities and experiences to help each child reach their full potential. This will ensure your child is ready for school when they leave St. George’s Nursery. It is a child- centred approach to learning.

Every single one of our nursery staff makes each child and their families feel welcome, ensuring that all children are safe, happy and learning. They go above and beyond to foster an environment where our children, their families and our fellow colleagues feel a part of the family.

Development Framework & Curriculum

In order to be prepared for the future, children have to learn to develop their curiosity, self-confidence and determination and learn how to use to their creativity and imagination. They must learn to become creative thinkers and effective communicators. At St. George’s Nursery, we will help children to develop these skills, and will ensure that they acquire the understanding that learning is not sterile, dull or uninspiring, but rather that it leads to a world of opportunities, self-actualisation and fulfilment.

"Children benefit from a broad curriculum covering all areas of learning. Staff use dedicated reading areas, both inside and outside, to encourage children's literacy skills and love of books." Ofsted, 2022

The EYFS is grouped into three prime areas and four specific areas of learning as follows:

Our Pedagogy - how we teach the curriculum

Here are some of the theories we incorporate into our approach. By integrating these theories into our practices, we strive to create a dynamic and enriching learning environment that empowers each child to thrive and reach their full potential.

  • Socio-Cultural Theory: We integrate this by fostering an environment where British values are explored, drawing on the rich cultural diversity of our team and families, by scaffolding children’s learning, and more.
  • Attachment Theory: Our emphasis on building secure attachments with each child is evident in our key person approach, characterised by professional love, nurturing care, parent involvement & partnership, and more.
  • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: We prioritise meeting children’s fundamental needs and providing a nurturing environment that supports their emotional well-being.
  • The Reggio Emilia Approach: We encourage open-ended resources and activities, we nurture curiosity, we foster moments of awe and wonder, and more.
  • Scandinavian Approach: We emphasise physical development, outdoor learning, exploration, and prioritising the well-being of both children and staff.
